Watermelon Harvest

I always get asked many questions concerning watermelons such as “why did we leave so many,” or “how do you tell the difference between the seeded verses the seedless.” Well five years ago, I was asking those same questions. Watermelons are an interesting and fun crop to grow. Things change quickly in the watermelon patch after planting. I am amazed at how fast those things grow. If you have been around Harris Farms much at all, then you know that we love growing things that we love to eat or look at- strawberries, tomatoes, sweet corn, watermelons and flowers.

We began picking this year July 8th, and finished September 15th with a short break in August. We picked and shipped just over one million melons this year. We were blessed with a bountiful crop. Of all the crops we grow, nothing brings the family together like picking and packing melons. Everyone is involved, either in the field or in the barn. I wouldn’t say that the work in melons is as tough as a cutting tobacco but you sure know that you did something at the end of the day. – Keith
