Strawberry Planting Season

It is the month of September and the summer heat is making its last exhibit as it collides with the crisp cool mornings of fall. Despite the many challenges of 2020, our spring strawberry crop performed beyond every expectation, allowing us to expand and keep up with our growing family. Motherhood and the upcoming arrival of our new baby girl has limited my participation in the fall planting; however, James Tate and I have been cheering on our farmer from the sidelines with lots of sweet tea and warm dinners.

The preparations are many; the soil must be amended, disked and tilled. Our young farmer attaches the bedding machine to the tractor and pulls it through the field, forming tall firm beds of plastic for our new plants. The planting process is a tedious one, requiring the participation of our entire farm crew as 60,000 strawberry plugs are planted by hand. There is something about hard work that builds a common camaraderie amongst our farm kids and migrant workers. The work is eased with some Spanish lessons, good conversation, snacks and coke breaks, making the event a little more enjoyable.

For most farmers, fall is most commonly known for the harvest, the completion of a crop. For the strawberry farmer, it is only the beginning. - Jordan
